I remember my grand aunt,
Presentacion
My grandmother's older sister
Born at the turn of the century
The woman with the sweetest tooth
who with all the sugars she consumed,
never had diabetes
I remember how we would prepare
sumptuous desserts
and we look for the missing ingredients
I remember how embarrassed she looked
because she ate them.
A refined genteel woman
but when she gets angry which is quite rare,
she would quote from characters
in ancient literature.
I was fascinated.
I never met a woman
so sweet and gentle
yet so confident with who she is.
Kind, generous and uncompromising.
An avid reader, lover of books.
She chose not to join her sister
to go to prestigious boarding school,
prefers to read instead of wear a skirt
A beautiful woman who inherited her mother's eyes
Many eligible bachelors for several decades
keep knocking on her door
She declined them all
She declined what society during her time
considered the norm
To marry and to have lots of children.
She dedicated her life in prayer
and lived a life according to her own terms.
The Grand Aunt of Everyone
I will not forget her contributions in this world.
She may not have a child of her own or a husband
but she she was never lonely
for she had a heart that was pure
and a mind that was free
It cannot be denied that this
unassuming woman left an
incredible mark in this world
for a little girl never forgot her.
